Campaign for Climate Justice Nepal (CCJN), as the Nepal arm of the Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice (GCDCJ) has organised the ‘People’s Climate March’ with the key demand: ‘Fight for Climate Justice!, System Change Not Climate Change!!’ on 19 September 2014 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
“We demand from developed countries; at least 40% deep emission cuts by 2020, immediate delivery of climate finance of $15 billion and technology transfer, free from intellectual property rights. These climate actions are urgent for developing countries, especially for a Least Developed Country (LDC) like Nepal who is least responsible for the climate catastrophe but is on its frontlines” said Dr. Sarba Raj Khadka, Coordinator of CCJN while addressing the mass in front of UN House.
CCJN has handed over the ‘Statement of Demands’, addressed to UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon through Mr. Jamie McGoldrick, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to Nepal. Similarly, a copy of the ‘Statement of Demands’ was also handed over to PM Sushil Koirala, as he is going to attend the UN Climate Summit scheduled on 23 September in New York.
More than 200 participants representing 41 organisations consist of peasant’s movement, women’s movement, trade unions, youths and other civil society organisations (CSOs) took part in the People’s Climate March. The March was started from Jawalakhel, lalitpur and headed towards United Nation House located at Pulchowk, Lalitpur.
The People’s Climate March was organised in the context that, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is hosting the Climate Summit on 23 September in New York, which has caught both public and media attention globally. The Climate Summit aims to engage leaders at the highest level – UN Member States, civil society, private sector – to advance climate action especially towards the new climate agreement which will be adopted in 2015 in Paris and implemented from 2020.
