Workers Rally in Savar Demands Relief from Rising Costs in Bangladesh

Around 300 workers and youth activists gathered at Savar, Bangladesh on 15 May 2026 to mark May Day under the slogan “Reduce the prices of essential commodities, save workers.”

Organised by the Labour Working Group of the SAAPE campaign member- Democratic Budget Movement (DBM), the rally highlighted the growing strain of rising living costs on working people. Speakers, highlighted the growing economic strain on workers amid persistent price hikes. They called for ration and health cards, expansion of social protection in the national budget, and specialised hospitals for workers.

They also demanded an effective pension scheme, workplace accident compensation aligned with international standards, and a functional workers’ protection fund with worker participation in labour-related decision making. The speakers warned that sustainable economic development would remain elusive unless workers’ rightful demands and protections were ensured.
